Treasure Hunting: The Sunday Market

February 3, 2013

I can’t even begin to explain how happy the Sunday Antique Market makes me feel. Like an insect drawn to light, I hop from display to display in search of the next item that makes my heart flutter. I’m not quite sure when my infatuation with all things old began (I used to hate everything that wasn’t new when I was a kid). Now I love the character and history behind each piece.

I think one of the reasons I visit the market so often is because I feel like I’m getting a private glimpse into peoples’ lives – rich or poor, local or international, young or old. I also love conducting mini interviews with the vendors. If something grabs my attention, I ask them where they found the piece, why they bought it and when it was made. I’ve spent countless hours listening to stories (both from the vendors and buyers). They are incredible!

The market does get crowded and you really have to search for the special pieces. But like any good hunt, the thrill of finding something you treasure is worth every moment. Here are the gems I bought the last time I visited:

I may be watching too much Downton Abbey

And some other pics I snapped with my phone at the market:

He wanted to stay!
