Anytime Is Game Time

October 15, 2014

No, really. Anytime. Those who know me can attest that I’m a bit random and try to squeeze in as much fun as possible into my daily life. After all, we only live once, right?! This means taking the time to do spontaneous and sometimes silly things (like riding the big wheel bike at Cirque du Soleil sporting a dress and heels). So when Mattel shipped me a few of their most popular games and asked me to incorporate some game into my life, I jumped on board. I mean, who doesn’t love joyously yelling out UNO in the middle of the badlands?!? For the record, I defeated my hubby in a record 2 minutes…

Although I tested out a handful of games – most of which I hadn’t played before – I became slightly addicted to one: UNO. Maybe it’s nostalgia (it was the first game I learned to play when I immigrated to Canada), maybe it’s because I can take the little red box with me anywhere…

UNO in a pumpkin patch? Oh yes we did!

UNO with strangers in lederhosen? Yup, did that too.

Or maybe it’s because I’m on a winning streak…

Whatever the reason, I’ve rediscovered my love for the game. And I also learned a few things along the way:

  • My friends and I are very competitive and will endlessly play “one more game” to determine who reigns supreme.
  • No one actually knows all the rules for UNO.
  • It’s exhilarating to play games in unconventional places, especially outdoors. Not only do you get some fresh air while you’re at it, but you get to experience places you’d normally just pass through a bit differently.
  • Games are an amazing way to meet new people. Yes, I invited complete strangers to play with me and it was fabulous; a daily dose of spontaneity and a shared moment that connected us all – like when these folks played Pictionary in the middle Sherway Gardens…

As I continue to interrupt regularly scheduled programming for a round or two of game, I encourage you to do the same. Grab your friends, family or a complete stranger and see what the resurgence of boardgames is all about. Whether you’re at the cottage or at an ever-popular board game café, you’ll laugh, you’ll grumble and with a bit of luck/skill hopefully you’ll win! Ah, the sweet taste of victory… Speaking of victory, how amazing would it be to win some games to kick of your streak? Mattel Game On! is giving away prizes to celebrate their new mantra Anytime is #GameTime! Just answer their weekly game challenge here to enter. Good luck my friends…and future opponents?!

Special thanks to Mattel for sending me the games. As always, all reviews and opinions are entirely my own.
