I will never forget the moment our midwife placed Luka on your chest. Tears streaming down my face, I knew I wouldn’t be the first person to hold him like we had planned in our Hug Plan. But what I witnessed was perhaps even more beautiful: the two loves of my life hugging for the very first time. Skin-to-skin, heart-to-heart. I’m so happy we made you the Designated Alternate Hugger when we filled out our Hug Plan because there’s no one else I would rather see giving Luka his first skin-to-skin hug than you. It immediately took away all the pain and filled my heart to the brim. The way you looked at him is indescribable… so pure, so proud, so madly in love….

An unbreakable bond was formed at the hospital that afternoon. One that continues to grow exponentially by the hour. As a mother, nothing brings me more joy than watching the two of you together. I love that you begin and end each day with a skin-to-skin hug — something we both know has boundless medical and psychological benefits for Luka. The way you wrap your arms around him when we take him out of his swaddle in the morning and after his evening bath is so special. Your eyes twinkle, a huge smile takes over your face and I sense such a warm and calm energy during those precious moments. This is love as I know it…

As we both navigate this new path of parenthood together, I feel so lucky to have you as my partner. Thank you for being my best friend, sous chef, merry maid, stroller-walker-extraordinaire and – most importantly – the greatest role model our son could ever ask for.
