Vacay Flashback: Thailand

January 11, 2013

Recently, it seems like everyone is going to Thailand! Having had the privilege of visiting the country myself, I don’t blame them. I’ve been to some pretty awesome places around the globe, but there is a certain je ne sais quoi about Thailand. It looks like a lot of people share my sentiment.

My observations:

  • Scenery: lush vegetation, beautiful mountains, unique animals, emerald waters and endless beaches on the islands.

Koh Phangan

  • People: the friendliest I have ever met (so friendly, in fact, that I thought I was being scammed most of the time). The Thai have a great sense of humour, are extremely hardworking and have a luminous vitality. I loved watching the kids play in Chaloklum…

  • Food: to DIE for. The aromas, textures, freshness and balance of authentic Thai food is unparalleled.

  • Transportation: so cute – tuk tuks and pink cabs everywhere!!

Some recos:

  • Koh Phangan – Specifically, the north side of the island. We stayed at Mandalai Hotel in a little fishing village called Chaloklum and loved it. Bottle Beach I and II are nice day trips. The south side of the island is notorious for it’s full moon parties (which can be fun if you’re into drunken beach soirées). I recommend renting a scooter and doing a tour of the island. That way you can plop down wherever you want.

  • Siam Paragon – I don’t think I’ve ever recommended a mall as a “must-see”, but this gem is an exception. It is unbelievable! With world-class restaurants, luxury shops and a breathtaking aquarium, it’s no wonder that it is one of 2012’s most instagrammed places.
  • Ang Thong National Marine Park – a picture is worth a thousand words, right? Just google the park and you’ll know why this destination is on my list.
  • Temples, temples and more temples. One of my faves was Wat Pho. Make sure you get a Thai massage when you go (they’re onsite!)

  • When in Bangkok, take the time to visit a rooftop bar for a cocktail. I promise you won’t regret it. Oh, and have dinner at Cabbages and Condoms (it’s beautiful and your money goes towards a great cause).

I could literally go on forever and I’m sure I’ve missed loads of highlights. Have you been? I’m definitely going back and would love to hear your recos!
