What To Eat At The CNE: Top 5 Sweet Treats

August 22, 2015

Mmmm deliciously sweet, gooey, mouthwatering fair food. From cotton candy to funnel cake, there is certainly no shortage of sweet treats to indulge in at one of North America’s largest fairs (over 1.43 million visitors hit the CNE grounds last year). Fortunately for you – and unfortunately for my waistline – I live right across from The Ex and have the inside scoop (mmm ice cream) on what I think you should devour during your visit this year. So put on your stretchy pants, grab your water bottle (refilling stations available onsite) and take your fam/friends on this sweet escape…

Sweet Treat #1: Deep Fried Cheesecake – do NOT leave the CNE without trying this amazing New York-style cheesecake. Wrapped in a tortilla, deep fried until crispy and topped with chocolate syrup and cinnamon sugar, it was our favourite dessert at the fair this year.
Where To Get It: Pickle Pete’s beside the lumberjack show
Cost: $7

Sweet Treat #2: Baonana Split – we love the idea of topping a fluffy bao bun with freshly sliced bananas, hazelnut chocolate, maraschino cherries, chocolate & strawberry syrups and whipped cream. The dessert is large and rich enough to share with an amigo.
Where To Get It: Far East Taco in the Food Building, booth #124
Cost: $6.19

Sweet Treat #3: Coffee And Doughnuts Milkshake – this thick shake whipped up by a Toronto institution (Fran’s has been around since the 1940’s) is a meal on its own! It took a few sips to get used to the texture, but I loved the flavour profile. Chewing doughnuts is so last year…
Where To Get It: Fran’s Restaurant in the Food Building, booth #604
Cost: $9 Fran’s

Sweet Treat #4: Deep-Fried Red Velvet Oreos – what’s better than Oreos? Deep fried oreos cocooned inside red velvet batter and topped with cream cheese icing and powdered sugar!
Where To Get It: The Funnel Cake Shop in the Food Building, booth #433
Cost: 3 for $7

Sweet Treat #5: The Campfire – vanilla bean cake “fries” topped with warm chocolate sauce, whipped topping, maraschino cherry, graham crackers and marshmallows. Even better than the taste? You’ll leave feeling pretty “sweet” for supporting two Humber College Baking and Pastry Arts Management grads who pitched their class project to the CNE and snagged a coveted spot at the fair.
Where To Get It: Cake Poutine – Hall A in the Enercare Centre, booth #1137
Cost: $5

You have until Sept 7th to devour these goodies at the CNE. Make sure to share your faves with me as I will be feasting there way more than should ever be permitted. Oh, and if you happen to win something ginormous, send me a pic — I ‘d love to see your larger than life winnings (more on that here).

Admission to the CNE and the sweets shared in this post were all complimentary. As always, all reviews and opinions are entirely my own.
