Beyond The Smokestacks: The Waterfalls Of Hamilton

August 12, 2015

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Hamilton, Ontario? For most people, it usually has something to do with its industrial past. Having had the chance to explore the booming city for the past year or so, I’ve come to discover completely different sides of the hammer. And while I’m beyond excited by the rapidly growing food scene (more on that here), I’m equally blown away by the breathtaking waterfalls that dot the city and its surroundings. As always, I’m here to share my finds so you can enjoy them too. So pack your picnics and hit the road, a magical realm awaits…

Hailed as the waterfall capital of the world (there are more than 100 waterfalls in the area), Hamilton is the perfect place to go waterfall hopping. I’ve only been to a dozen so I consider myself a newbie explorer, but I thought I’d share my three faves so far:

Webster’s Falls – This is the largest waterfall in the region and also the most popular.

Devil’s Punchbowl – Don’t let my photo deceive you, this ribbon waterfall is approximately 37 metres in height. Located in Stoney Creek, it is the third highest waterfall in Hamilton.

Tews Falls – I basically felt like we took a heli tour to a lush, foreign land when we arrived at this waterfall. The jaw-dropping beaut is the tallest waterfall in Hamilton at 41 metres. It is also stunning in the winter months, but we won’t talk about that now…

Next on my list to explore: Albion Falls, Sherman Falls and Tiffany Falls. I’d love your recos/tips if you have any. Happy waterfall hopping!

UPDATE: I just couldn’t stay away and visited Albion Falls shortly after writing this post. It is just as spectacular as many of you described in your emails, Instagram comments and tweets. Thanks for the reco!
